Online Resources: Child Development

General overview sites

The US Department of Health and Human Services has dedicated a section of their site to the subject of Child Development.  This very helpful resource covers the basics from infancy to adolescence. It also maintains links to federal sites related to common developmental problems.

Teaching Children With Special Needs

The National Institute of Mental Health approaches the subject of ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) through research on mind, brain, and behavior.

Autism Network International (ANI) is an autistic-run self-help and advocacy organization for those on the spectrum. This is a highly educational site enabling the neurologically typical to move outside their own understanding of the world. Essential reading here includes Don't Mourn for Us, by Jim Sinclair.

The Autism Society of America is dedicated to increasing public awareness about autism and the day-to-day issues faced by individuals with autism, their families and the professionals with whom they interact.

Oasis is a comprehensive site about Asperger Syndrome.

The International Dyslexia Association discusses the nature and manifestations of Dyslexia in an article by Michael Ryan, PhD.

Teaching Gifted Children

Contrary to common misperceptions, "gifted" children may be challenged in many ways, often with learning disabilities. This page exposing some of the Myths About Gifted Children is a must-read.

The Institute for Educational Advancement is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting young people to identify and develop their fullest potential.

SENG (Supporting the Emotional Needs of the Gifted) is dedicated to fostering environments in which gifted children, in all their diversity, are understood and supported by their families, schools, workplaces and communities.

The Davidson Institute's Article Library contains a large collection of informative articles on all aspects related to the education and understanding of children labeled (for lack of a better term) as "gifted."
